Wei Shen Zhang
The most wellknown calligrapher in Shanghai in the 1970's
Early in 1969, the promising Mr. Wei Shen Zhang already contributed to a book -
“The book of modern Chinese calligraphy ”, a book published containing works of the
most famous calligrapher in Shanghai. He was 22 yeas old at that time. After that, he
had also published calligraphies best representing his works in a magazine names
“Calligraphy” by a Chinese publish house and a book named “The modern Chinese
calligraphy” by a Japanese publisher.
Because he was full of enthusiasm in calligraphy,
these small stones and writing brushes followed
his footsteps when went to the countryside
during the 10 yeas of the culture revolution. In
his late 30s, these small stones and writing
brushes followed to Denmark and later across
the ocean to Los Angeles. His fantastic skills
had impressed Chinese and many foreigners.
In the 1980s, Mr. Zhang teaches calligraphy in Copenhagen University. At the same
time he opened a Chinese calligraphy exhibition in “States art of museum in Sweden”.
A Swedish editor had also published a book “Chinese tradition arts” by the most
famous artists of China. In this book Mr. Zhang also presented his Chinese writings
and calligraphies.
Now Mr. Zhang living in Los Angeles in 30 yeas. In his own studio - Wilson Studio,
he has many students who want to learn calligraphy, many of his students are from
Tai Wan. They are so happy because they can learn the original tradition Chinese
skills, which they didn’t, had chance to learn before.
The needs of students has also challenged Mr. Wei Shen Zhang´s skills to became
even better and better. Recently Mr. Zhang had published a book named “Wei Shen
Zhang calligraphy collection”. In this book, readers can see the best works in his life.
